10 Design Choices That’ll Never Go Out of Style
None of us want our homes to look or feel dated, but realistically who has the time, energy, or money to constantly refresh your space? Hands down, the best way to create a home with staying power is to incorporate design elements that will stand the test of time.
Don’t get us wrong. We aren’t immune to decorating trends. We love to mix in new and fresh ideas to keep things interesting, but our goal for both our personal homes and our clients homes is to have a timeless foundation then layer in the trends we love in a more sustainable way.
Here are our top ten design choices that we believe will never go out of style (in no particular order):
Natural Stone Countertops
High-quality natural stone countertops like marble, soapstone, and quartzite are worth the investment. They are timeless and versatile thanks to their beauty and durability. Stone ages gracefully, developing more character over time. Just be sure to keep the patterns and colors subtle and classic for longevity.
Stripes
Patterns will always have a place in our homes, but we think that stripes are arguably the most classic pattern. They never feel too trendy on rugs, pillows, curtains, or wallpaper. Whether you go bold or keep it simple, stripes are flexible – working well with just about any style. And bonus: their geometric structure plays really well with other patterns!
Living Finish Hardware
Just as natural stone can age beautifully, so can hardware. Unlacquered brass, natural nickel, oil-rubbed bronze, and copper (if intentionally left unsealed) have a living finish that patina over time. That organic process feels authentic and appropriate in a multitude of design styles for the long haul.
Classic Moldings
We have yet to meet a person that doesn’t love the look of beautiful architectural details. I mean, who doesn’t love a good crown molding? Done right and appropriately for the age and style of your home, moldings like tall baseboards, picture frame molding, coffered ceilings, door millwork, beams, board & batten walls, and crown molding are virtually immune to being outdated.
White Bedding
We dare you to name something as timeless as white bedding. Crisp white sheets, pillowcases, and a duvet cover are as classic as it gets. They always look inviting and sophisticated – very hotel chic. You can also easily layer texture, color, or pattern with white bedding to add personality. Best of both worlds!
Natural Rugs
Natural rugs are the perfect design choice if you are on the hunt for an area rug that will withstand the test of time. Materials like wool, sisal, and jute will absolutely pass the longevity test because of their durability and their ability to handle higher traffic areas throughout your home.
Original Artwork
Choosing original artwork over mass-produced ones will never be a design decision you regret. Not only are you supporting artisans and makers, you are selecting unique pieces that can stay with your for a lifetime. Plus, original art doesn’t have to mean expensive. You can purchase locally from up-and-coming artists or buy high-quality prints of original works.
Medium Toned Hardwood Floors
If you are ready to refinish your existing hardwood floors or install new ones, go with a neutral mid-tone, warm brown for a look that is always in style. They are the goldilocks of flooring. Not too light. Not too dark. Not too red, orange, or yellow. Just right if you are thinking about forever.
Marble Tile
Marble tile has been popular for centuries so it’s a safe bet that 2026 won’t be the end of its long run. You can’t go wrong with an elegant marbles like carrara, calacatta, and nero marquina for your entryway, fireplace surround, shower, kitchen backsplash, or bathroom flooring. Hexagon, basketweave, checkerboard, herringbone, and classic subway shapes are particularly timeless choices.

Nature Inspired Colors
By using colors found in nature as the foundational palette of your home, you help create a sense of peace and balance. Colors that mimic the sky, plants, water, and the earth have a calming effect and will always be “in” for that very reason. Tranquil blues and greens, soft whites, wispy grays, warm tans and browns are grounding shades and all act like neutrals. Think of these earthy colors as solid choices for more permanent and expensive home items. Then utilize bolder, trendier colors for easy-to-change elements to give your home that added pop.
What do you think? Does our list hit the mark? Could you love these design choices forever?
